FIVE GREEN ROOFS ON LEED PLATINUM BUILDING, DOWNTOWN BOSTON
Recover worked with Oxford Properties, the site's property manager, over a five year period to create solutions for their building’s different roof levels, which all had different priorities and budgets. The first two green roofs were installed in 2017 on the 6th and 7th floors, adding 9,500 square feet of sedum green space visible from offices on the upper floors and surrounding buildings. These roofs were installed in two phases using a 60-ton crane to convey components from street level. Recover scheduled the roof installations to minimally impact building tenants as well as pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Boylston Street.
Two years later, Recover installed two more green roofs on the 19th and 20th floors. The installation required anchoring 100-foot safety lines on the 24th floor rooftop, which crew members harnessed into while installing 1,700 square feet of LiveRoof trays along open edges. The trays host a handful of sedum varieties that accent office windows, adding a green view that attracts birds and other pollinators.
In June 2020, Recover installed an additional 365 square foot Zinco built-in-place sedum roof along the edge of a pre-built deck on the 20th floor. Along with the sedum, our crew also installed ten one-foot tall planters with perennial flowers, liriope, sedums, and junipers.
The additions of these green roofs not only enhance the beauty of the building and provide building occupants with calming views of plants, but they also help regulate the roof’s temperature, retain stormwater, and reduce the Urban Heat Island effect.
